But is such a stanceMoreChristian tradition has long been hostile to the book of Esther. Believing the book lacked a specifically religious perspective, making no mention of God or of prayer, many of the church fathers regarded it as uncanonical.

But is such a stance justified? Perhaps this short book of the Old Testament has more to say to us today than we would expect. In Gospel in Esther, the author challenges such long pervading attitudes. He presents an overtly Christian and typological reading of Esther, in which Esther herself is presented as a female exemplar of Christ. What would appear to be an entirely secular telling of a story of deliverance is shown to be a typological depiction of the universality of Gods grace and the all-sufficiency of the sacrifice of Jesus, in whom God has done all that is necessary to save humankind.

- Includes suggestions for further reading. - Discusses key words and verses in relation to the overall plot and its Christological portent. - Interweaves the implications of the theology of Esther with its cultural explication. - Contains a coherent summary. - Seeks to engage with God, His word and our experience. - Applies the worldview and meta-narrative of Esther to the postmodern secular West.
